Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentation or mammoplasty surgery is the surgical procedure that aims at increasing the size and shape or fullness of the breast. Depending on the implant type and the type of operation chosen, the surgeon may insert a breast implant under the chest muscles or breast tissue. An implant can usually work with appropriate care and caution for about 7 to 12 years and requires frequent inspections to maintain its operation.

There are different kinds of breast implants found which are preferred by the surgeons. Let us have a look at the various options available.

Saline breast implants: These breast implants are filled with sterile saltwater. If the implant starts leaking, a saline implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the human body.  These kinds of implants give a uniform shape and add to the firmness and feel and suitable for ladies of 18 and above age.

Another kind which is the structured implants are filled with sterile saltwater and contains an inner structure that aims to give a more natural feel to the implant.

Silicone breast implants: They are filled with silicone gel and the gel gives a very natural breast tissue like feeling. If these implants leak after being placed in the breast, then the gel will remain as it is in the implant shell or it can escape into the breast implant pocket. A leaking implant having silicone gel will not collapse, unlike the above saline implant. One of the disadvantages of silicone gel is that the woman requires to pay a visit to the surgeon periodically to ensure that the implants are working properly. With the help of MRI or ultrasound screening, the breast implant’s conditions can be assessed. These are usually found to be suitable for women of 22 age and above.

Gummy bear breast implants: Gummy bear breast implants are names given to form-stable implants since they have the ability to keep their shape unchanged even if the implant shell gets broken. Unlike traditional silicone gel implants, the consistency of the silicone gel inside these kinds is thicker and the implants are also more firm than the former ones. These implants have more projections at the bottom and tend to taper upwards at the top portions. If these shaped implants rotate inside, then they will give an unusual look to the breasts and will require another surgery to correct them. The gummy bear implants would require a longer incision in the skin than usual.

Round breast implants: These implants can make the breasts look fuller than the form-stable implants and have a higher profile option which can achieve more projection than usual. Since these implants are uniformly shaped hence there is no problem even if they rotate a bit and goes out of place.

Smooth breast implants: The smooth breast implants give a very soft feeling and they can move with the implant pocket which allows for more natural movements. Smooth implants give a more palpable or visible rippling effect under the skin.

Textured breast implants: These implants develop a scar tissue that sticks to the implant and makes them less prone to move around inside the breast and change their positions subsequently. The risk of developing tight scar tissues diminishes significantly with the use of texture.

There are more kinds of implants available in the market and newer technologies are being introduced by the manufacturers from time to time. No matter what the surgeon and the patient choose it is important to follow the routine check-ups to ensure that they are functioning as desired.

Breast reconstruction or augmentation surgery is usually done on a candidate who desires the following:

  • Enlargement of breasts that are naturally small
  • Restoration of breast size and shape after undergoing pregnancy, breastfeeding and excessive loss of weight.
  • Restoration of symmetry in asymmetrical pair of breasts
  • Restoration of the breast or breasts after some surgery or accident. Plastic surgery can include both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

Reconstructive breast surgery can be done as a part of total breast cancer treatment as well. Cosmetic breast surgery is done to up the aesthetic quotient

Breasts will be physically examined by the doctor to assess its shape and size and the kind of breast tissues involved in the natural construction of the breast. A mammogram or breast x-ray shall be done on the breasts to assess the problems and surgical procedure to be conducted. The skin texture is also observed carefully so that the holding of the implant gets better with this.

During the breast augmentation surgery, the surgeon will administer general anesthesia to the patient and after some time will make the incision in any one of the following regions of the breasts.

  •          Inframammary or the underside of the breast
  •          Transaxillary or under the arms
  •          Periareolar or around the nipple
  •          For the purpose of reconstruction, it can be placed through the mastectomy scar

As per normal standards, surgeons are warned not to place any breast implant by making an incision in the belly button or peri umbilical approach.

The incision locations can have an affect on the visibility of the scars and any complications that can arise as a result of the surgery at a later date. Making the incision in the underside of the breast is considered to be the most common location used since the skin gets folded here naturally. The chances of scarring with such an incision become more noticeable when the patient is young and thin and has never been through motherhood.

When implants are placed in the breast using the under-arm approach then most likely the surgeon will have to make use of an endoscope device which is a tool having camera attached and other surgical instruments will also be inserted into the incision site for helping the surgeon to get a guide in placing the implant in its correct location.  Visible scarring chances are very few around the breast, but a scar can be formed on the underside of the arm of the patient.

Now let us have a look at each of the techniques individually.

Inframammary technique: In this technique, a very short incision is made in the crease formed naturally underneath the breast which is called the inframammary fold. A very thin 1 to 2-inch measurement’s scar is formed which makes it quite easy to hide within the natural crease. One of the main advantages of this kind of incision includes better and wider access point which enables the surgeon to place larger silicone implants or gummy bear implants with perfection.

Peri areolar: Around the outer edge of the areola the incision is made so the scar is formed within the natural transition and is somewhat overshadowed in the pigmentation of the areola. This kind of incision is also preferred by cosmetic surgeons when they are conducting a mild or moderate breast lift surgery as well along with this.

Trans-axillary: This requires making a small incision within the armpit through which the cosmetic surgeon can place the breast implant with the help of the endoscope as mentioned above. No scar on the breast is formed but armpit will have a scar formed which can fade with time.

Transumbilical: The technique involves making an incision just above the belly button. The implants are inserted through the incision and slowly made to proceed to reach the respective breasts. A small scar is formed at the site of incision but visibly no scar formation is in the breast itself which is an advantage.

People who do not undergo surgery may think of other non-invasive treatments, including herbal supplements. Phytoestrogen may contain red clover, flaxseed, fennel, soy and hop, and other types of herbs for this herbal supplement. Common aphrodisiacs such as oat straw and dried herb are also used. Nonetheless, none of these steps should be used without prior consulting the healthcare provider as they may interfere with many other medications the patient uses and cause unwanted allergic reactions or harmful outcomes.

Apart from this, patients can try different workouts and work by improving their posture, food and make some minor lifestyle changes to aid in natural breast augmentation. Sometimes routine injections like Botox and fats injectors can also help in increasing the size of the breast but then they have to be continued with frequent check-ups and follow up injections. They are any day cheaper and safer options compared to breast augmentation surgeries.

Breast augmentation surgery requires the patient to lose some weight and have a proper diet as prescribed by the doctor before the surgery. Any contraceptive pills and blood-thinning medications should be stopped2 or 3 weeks prior to the surgery. The patient must also take care to quit smoking and consumption of alcohol before the surgery as it has a direct effect on the recovery time and quality post breast augmentation surgery.

Before going for the surgery, it is important to have a hearty conversation with the doctor to understand the outcomes and avoid any later stage shock which is not as per expectations. The night before the surgery have a light meal and ensure to remove any kind of makeup including nail polish on finger enamels.

The surgeon will advise the patient on pain management medications and recommend wearing a post-surgical bra since the patient will not be allowed to wear an underwired bra immediately after surgery. This bra shall support and allow healing for 4 to 6 weeks whereafter the patient can be advised to wear a normal underwired bra.

During the recovery period, the doctor shall make a chart of food that will help in tissue building and aid in the recovery in the regions surrounding the surgical region. Nuts and fruits, vegetables and lean protein will be recommended as they help in building tissues which shall aid in faster recovery.

Apart from this saline solution and betadine solution can be given to apply and clean the region as immediately showering is not recommended.

Any unusual pain, redness and extra bruising if observed should be immediately reported to the doctor for urgent actions.

One must note that in spite of having a breast implant or augmentation surgery one can never get ignored from the effects of aging. With time, breast tissues will evidently lose their shape and elasticity and the effects of implants cannot fight these symptoms permanently.
The cost of surgery with the implant in India can be between $3500 - 4500 which is a far more cheap costing compared to rates in the USA and U.K.
